Health Economics and Outcomes Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Throughout the program, our fellows:

• Gain experience in:
  • Utilizing medical/pharmacy claims and electronic medical record (EMR) data for research and quality improvement programs
  • Protocol development, data collection, project management and statistical analysis
  • Preparation and dissemination of results
• Apply learned research concepts and appropriate analytical methods in conducting retrospective database studies, prospective research studies and economic modeling
• Develop a functional knowledge of statistical software: SAS, SQL, STATA, R
• Gain a holistic perspective of different healthcare stakeholders’ strategies:
  • Managed Care – Focus on cost containment through quality and outcome metrics
  • Pharmaceutical Industry – Develop and communicate value propositions through real-world evidence generation
• Fellows engage in cross-functional initiatives that enhance patient care and provider collaboration, including:
  • Partnering with providers and clinicians to optimize patient outcomes
  • Participating in system-level and interdisciplinary committees
  • Enhancing medication access through high-touch coordination between providers, specialty pharmacists, and patients
• Master of Science in Health Outcomes – University of Texas at Austin
  • In addition to hands-on research training at Baylor Scott & White Health, fellows pursue a Master of Science in Health Outcomes through the University of Texas at Austin.
  • Fellows receive structured training in courses such as:
    • Pharmacoeconomics, Intro to Pharmacoepidemiology, and Health Policy
    • Innovative Health Technologies (e.g., AI in healthcare, Intro to Machine Learning)
    • Multilevel Modeling in Health Science, Experimental Design and Inferential Statistics
  • The curriculum is customizable based on each fellow’s background and career goals, with the opportunity to choose from a wide range of electives across disciplines. Completion of the degree is expected by the end of the 2-year fellowship.
• Contribute to the body of literature in the development and publication of abstracts, posters (1, 2, 3) and manuscripts (1, 2)
• Attend professional meetings and seminars with travel, attendance and associated costs reimbursed dependent on active research dissemination and participation for:
  • AMCP Annual Meeting
  • ISPOR Annual International Meeting
  • ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exposition
  • Epic Analyst Training
